Low
Country Veteran |
For
the ten years prior to the Armada crisis English soldiers had been
fighting in the Low Countries (The Netherlands and Northern France)
Queen Elizabeth had not been able to entertain the idea of going to
open war with Spain even after she was excommunicated and the Pope
persuaded Phillip of Spain to plan her downfall, but she had
supported good Protestant men who would fight for their Protestant
cousins who were rebelling against their Spanish Overlords. This
also meant that a good deal of English men learnt to fight in modern
ways. The veterans from the Low Countries offer the English some
well trained experienced troops. |

Trained Bandsman |
The
Trained Band was the standard way of organising militia forces in
England in the late 16th century. The quality of training
and equipment varied from county to county depending on experience
of the men giving the training and the relative wealth of the
county. In 1588 the London bands had only 8% of men armed with bows
in Oxfordshire 40% of the men were armed with bows. The Trained
bands were not professional soldiers and were partly responsible for
equipping themselves |

Border Horse |
The
English used a variety of light horsemen. But the best Light
Horsemen from England and arguably all of Europe were the Border
Horsemen of the Anglo/Scottish borders. They rode sturdy horses
named bog trotters, they were armed in a variety of ways and were
used to operating in all conditions. They were excellent scouts and
foragers. They lived in a constant state of feud and were always
ready to bear arms. |
